A gentle melody drifted through the solemn Victoria Forestry. Nameless. She did not know where it had come from, only that it’d been with her the longest. The song might have been just a remnant of the past, something hummed into her infant ears during the time before. Today it filled her heart with some warmth on this lightly snowing afternoon, though the organ was capable of holding very little.

Actually, she strolled the grounds with no intention but to wander and listen. That morning the Robin paused during her breakfast and turned her nose to the open windows where they could hear the birds chirping. “They are calling, Constance. Do you hear their prayers?” Whatever words the Cardinals sang to Robin were not understood by her adopted daughter. Constance could only hear their little melody echoing through the snow tipped pines. She needn't be told to venture out into the grounds and find the one that’d been kissed. Though there were plenty of times she wanted to ask Robin why they couldn’t simply wait for the bird to settle on the windowsill.

“Don’t you want to enjoy the snow?”

Not particularly, but then that was what made Robin a good mother. She may have nurtured their bloodthirsty desires, but she never failed to nudge them towards simpler delights. Constance found herself quite content to be lost in the white blanket. Not many had walked the trails and the snow was almost entirely fresh. It was quiet. Even the city beyond couldn’t penetrate the silence. There was only the rippling river, the birds, and the humming assassin.

Constance dug her hands deeper into the pockets of her crimson overcoat as the wind picked up her curled hair. The breeze was bitter, but she wasn’t a stranger to the cold. A streak of red drew her attention to the peaks of the trees. She could just faintly see a Cardinal settling into its nest while it whistled happily.

“Do you have something to tell me?” Constance softly questioned, but received little more than another tune. She continued on her stroll until eventually she was confronted with not another of Robin’s precious birds, but a person. Constance simply raised a hand in greeting.

“And here I thought I was the only one mad enough to stroll in the snow this early…”

It was time.

Finally.

He supposed he shouldn't have been too put out given he was pulling strings and calling in favours but he wanted to go back to the realm of the humans because he was bored and waiting around was only adding to that. But when he had the official documents in hand that would allow him to cross through one of the remaining legal portals, a smile lit up his face.

Finally.

He shouldered the only bag he was bringing, having packed light as he wasn't sure how long the trip would be this go-around nor was he certain what would be required. Mostly he'd packed a few articles of clothing that he already owned that, from meandering through dreams, seemed would be acceptable for the current time, a few bits and bobs, and a thick envelope stuffed with his destination's currency as he wasn't the type of fae that could simply make such things out of thin air. He'd also been given a little rectangular piece of plastic that carried even more money. It was a curious item and his contact explained it the best he could about how it was attached to a bank account and that the money wasn't infinite so he'd have to find his own ways to make more when it was needed. That sounded like it could be fun so he wasn't too worried.

As he stared at the portal humming just down the path from where he stood, he took a moment to perfect his human shape. The last time he had passed through, a broad shouldered blonde man seemed like the ideal type for that region and had worked well for him. Now, from the dreams he had visited in recent months, it seemed like that could still work but was a lot more generic now. Instead he found a lot of fascination with men from countries known as Japan and Korea. The K-pop boys, he found, were rather delightful and had marvellous fashion sense and he quickly latched onto that as being his new form. He was still a bit attached to the idea of blonde hair so he kept that for the time-being but altered the length a bit until he was satisfied.

The paperwork was shown to the portal guards before they were handed back to him and he was waved through. With a grin, he stepped through, delighting in the wave of disorientation that hit him as the realities and time collided and tried to make sense of his arrival. Some travellers became nauseated by it and some blacked out entirely, but it gave him a thrill and excited him as it was a more extreme version of when he entered dreams across the borders.

His grin was still in place as he stepped out onto a patch of grass, taking a moment to adjust himself to the light of the setting sun that gently illuminated the forest surrounding him and the small cabin not too far away. A man brimming with power emerged from within and he held his paperwork out as the man approached. Again, he was given the approval he knew he'd get and tucked his precious papers into a pocket of his bag.

"Tell me, good gatekeeper, what is the exact date today?" His arrival should have still aligned with the timeflows between worlds almost being in sync but it was hard to tell on his own since he wasn't trained in that art. It occurred to him that perhaps he should have since the wait for the documents could have taken him into a change of flow and he missed the era that had excited him. But the year was what he hoped it would be and all the worries flittered from his mind. In fact, a laugh was born from the news and he nodded, pleased with the coincidence that aligned with his first arrival to the human realm.

"Samhain, eh? The Phoenix rises again." He thanked the gatekeeper for the news and got a bit more information out of him about the local area before the incubus once again known as Phoenix made his way into the city.

After countless days of searching high and low Nix finally found what he was looking for with hours to spare. Fairy circles, mushrooms growing in a perfect circle, were a perfect conductor for the full moon energies and served as a portal for a whole bunch of summoning rituals. While not durable enough to bring fae folk over from the Otherworld, they could be used to summon lesser creatures. One such being was Cu Sidhe, the fae hound.

It was a couple of hours past midnight when he arrived at the site. A gap between the dense trees where a beautiful circle of redcaps grew, basking in the white rays of the moon. Nix had brought everything he needed for the summoning, a vial of wolf blood, an Alderwood branch, pixie dust and a collar made by a fae spider. The items were set on the ground around the circle, blood poured in the middle of it. With a deep breath, he released his form, spider legs emerging from the fae's back and 4 sets of black eyes replacing his two. Nix then extended his clawed hands in the direction of the moon and started to sing.

The forest was filled with an ancient song, the language as old, as the earliest of civilizations even if the singer wasn't even close to that. Energy from the lay lines, from the moon, was gathered at the fairy circle, where it condensed in the ground till it was lit up brightly green. As quickly, as it started, it also ended and after the spell was finished the spider was just left to wait for someone to heed his call.
