Since moving out of his family’s estate, Asher had managed to maintain a relatively covert lifestyle whilst also obtaining some sense of opulence when it came to his living arrangements. To the larger population, he was likely considered somewhat of a hermit whose true location was unknown, but assumed to be “that big place on the lake”. This, essentially, was true. But the property was far-reaching and spanned at least ten acres and three dwellings - the smallest of which was where he lived, perhaps surprisingly. Despite his penchant for the finer things, Asher didn’t particularly enjoy large expanses when he wasn’t on four legs. The second residence was a guest home, decked out with multiple bedrooms for new members, and the last was a large hall right on the waterfront, often used for congregating the pack when the need arose.

Currently, the alpha was headed to that hall, dressed casually and barefoot. He’d sent a message to one of his members: a newer woman - or, a girl, really. A child in his eyes. Either way, he’d organised to meet Audrey for one of the first times since her initial induction. Though he tended to treat his pack as his family, Asher had an admittedly confusing relationship with the concept itself. He was still aloof and distant, even cold at times. But that didn’t mean he didn’t care; he just wasn’t entirely sure how to show it. One of the ways he attempted to, however, was this: teaching.

Asher was a mentor to his members, and he took that role very seriously. One of the most important things about living as a werewolf was intentional shifting and, within that, controlling one’s mind. And so, with his lesson plan mentally inscribed, he took a seat on a tree stump out the front of the hall, propped his ankle up on the opposite knee, and settled in to wait, checking his phone intermittently.

Audrey loved her job, but not so much that she wasn’t rushing to hang up her apron after her shift was done. She was polite about it, though, making sure her last tasks were done, and she’d greeted the next shift. She got along well with most of the other women and had no desire to create rifts between them. Nonetheless, Audrey was on the opposite side of the counter ordering her favourite iced mocha treat before leaving with her handbag on one shoulder and her phone in her right hand.

The message she kept staring at made her both nervous and excited. She hadn’t psent much time around Asher since he’d, well, mauled her that fateful day she’d bene trying to catch up with Cassidy about…. Audrey couldn’t really remember, but it was something work related. Next thing she knew she was literally in the wolves den and things had gone south. A whole new world had been poured out before her, if she survived long enough to see it. Which she had, though Audrey had no idea how she’d managed it. The mauling bite on her left thigh was easily concealed but also reminded her daily of what she’d been through.

That had been in February; somehow Audrey had made it through each of the full moon’s since then, not drawing any unwanted attention upon herself – or so she had thought; maybe she hadn’t been doing as well as she thought, if Asher wanted to see her that day. Audrey chewed on the end of her straw for a few moments, because she realised what she was doing and stopped – she didn’t want to split the straw before she’d finished her drink. She climbed on the bus without thought, swiping her card, and found herself a seat to contemplate her thoughts.

A few stops and then a short walk later had Audrey on the edge of the property owned by Asher, where she’d been mauled and where she had come to think of as a second home. She still lived at home with her parents, but was saving up so she could move out with some friends – or had been, before February. Now she wasn’t sure what was going to happen. She still wanted to move out, and so far had managed to artange ‘sleep overs’ during the full moon. Thankfully her parents were oblivious to the supernatural aspects of Greenbrooke. Sometimes Audrey wished she was still ignorant. But she did love what she had learned so far. That werewolves and vampires and magic wielding men and women were real. It was mind boggling!

As she made her way towards the main building, Audrey happened to glance to the side, and spotted Asher. She swallowed her nervousness and changed her angle slightly so she was walking towards him. They had interacted so little since she’d been Turned (and almost certainly she couldn’t recall meeting him prior to then) that Audrey had very little idea of how she was supposed to address him, or act around him – mostly because all her lessons in pack etiquette fled her mind as she came to a stop beside his tree stump, not wanting to interrupt whatever he was doing on his phone, but also not wanting to be a bumbling fool.

“You wanted to see me?” She asked, her voice quiet but not really timid, just not quite sure what would be the correct way to greet him. She didn’t think sniffing his butt would quite cover it, but the thought made her lips twitch in amusement so she bit her bottom lip to try and squish the expression.

Technology was something that had grown around Asher in a way that had been surprising, confusing, and, at times, irritating to him. But beyond all, it was convenient, and considering that he wasn’t going to age to death any time soon, he’d long since refused to become some fuddy-duddy old fool who was too stubborn to learn. Perhaps his negative traits were many, but obstinate was not among them - especially when pragmatism was more beneficial to his everyday routine.

With this in mind, he’d gone so far as to indulge in social media - though much more as an observer than as a commentator or, heaven forbid, an influencer. As profile pictures he thought it quite the twist of irony to use National Geographic images of wolves - and he was well aware that this humour was either lost on those who were unaware of the magic in their world, or was worthy of eye rolls from those who did. Something akin to a dad joke for a man who wanted so desperately to represent a father but had no idea how. Ah, but all that was far too deep for the description of his current scrolling through twitter, catching up on the latest dramas - this was his guilty pleasure, after all.

The deep, knowing hazel of his eyes rose from the lit screen when the timid voice of Audrey matched the footsteps he’d heard long before, and he deftly assessed the emotion on her face. He was good at reading people, and often showed as much - perhaps accidentally, or perhaps in an effort to subtly intimidate.
“Something funny?” He’d caught the twitch of her lip, but the comment didn’t appear to hold any malice. In fact, it was lightly playful, as if it might almost be a request to be let in on the joke.
“I did,” he continued, locking his phone and stuffing it into the pocket of his worn jeans as he rose from the tree stump. “I’ve heard whispers that you’re taking well to Changing.” He paused, watching her pensively once more, awaiting some kind of response - whether that be verbal or physical; either was acceptable, considering he hadn’t phrased it as a question. Those, everyone in the pack knew, were important to answer - with truth and haste.

“I’d like to see a demonstration. Come.” With that, and without looking to make sure that she followed, Asher turned and made his way into the hall through a large, wooden door. It slid open on a massive, rolling hinge, and he stepped into the open space before offering that Audrey do the same. Inside, the hall was a massive expanse of polished concrete flooring - Asher would have preferred floorboards, but they scratched too easily - and the only sections that appeared to be walled off contained a relatively large kitchen, and a bathroom on the opposite end of the structure. The ceilings were vaulted and high, and contained uniformly installed skylights - again, too breakable, though Asher would likely have preferred massive, scenic windows overlooking the lake. As an alpha, he had to make sacrifices. Not even double glazing would help if a rookie wolf went ballistic and threw themselves at the glass.

“Funny? Oh! No, sorry.” Audrey shook her head a couple of times, the motions quick and flickering, her ponytail jerking, before falling still as Asher changed the subject away from her idle but amused thought (she couldn’t imagine sharing that thought with anyone, but especially not her alpha!) and she was trotting to catch up with him before all of what he had said had registered in her mind. Wait. What? Audrey’s jaw worked aimlessly for a few moments, but no sound was forthcoming as she skittered to a stop behind Asher, watching him wide-eyed.

“I—yes – but, wait! Sir!” Audrey flapped her hands and took a deep breath, breathing it in and then slowly releasing it through her nostrils. “Only during the Moon,” she finally said, utterly breathless and wide eyed at the implication that she was turning at any other time. She had been told she was doing well when the moon was full, and had taken pride in that. But she hadn’t considered Turning when the moon wasn’t full. She’d only heard of it in passing, and realised it was probably something that had been kept from her lest she get excited and try it herself without … without what? A guardian? Someone who could control her and make her human again? Someone who could kill her if she went completely off her nut?

“I haven’t, um, you know. On purpose.” Audrey used her left hand to scratch idly at the back of her head, upsetting her ponytail; her right hand still held her almost-empy venti iced mocha. “Was I supposed to? No one has really talked about it.” Audrey was more than a little wide-eyed as she considered where this meeting was going, chewing on her bottom lip in a combination of excitement and anxiety. Could she change without the moon? She hadn’t had any issues taking to the routine of the moon; she’d heard plenty of tales about how it screwed with some folks, really messed them up and shit. But Audrey hadn’t had any side effects like that. She could even say honestly that she enjoyed the time she was forced into the body of a wolf. It was incredible.

Asher had simply quirked a thick eyebrow in response to Audrey’s quick denial, though she was likely lucky that he wasn’t all too invested in her answer. If he’d thought it important, he could have pushed - but perhaps it was best to ease her into his presence, rather than to force her to fear him to her very bones right from the beginning of their relationship. That wasn’t his way - as possessive and controlling as the man was, Asher often lured his prey with charm and cunning, rather than to rule entirely by the respect that fear forced in most. Fear did not permit loyalty without the foundations of trust.

When he turned to hear Audrey’s concerns, a smile had creased into his lips, laugh lines showing in behind the wiry shift of his beard.
“It’s alright,” he soothed, lifting both hands, palms facing outward to her, the same pose one might take with an excitable dog. “That’s all I’ve heard, and I don’t have great expectations.” His hands moved then, waving as though to swat away some fanciful idea that she would be his most gifted protégé. “The Change, though, it’s usually hard for people, especially you newbies. Even for me, it was. But you’re different - gifted in some way. So I think it’s important to get started early on this.”

He knew it at the time of her change - that there was something special about this curious girl, something that would make her valuable to him. Something that stopped him from ripping her limb from limb and instead leaving her something to come back to if she survived the Change. When he chose pack members, it wasn’t usually so impulsive as it had been with Audrey, but he had needed to make a quick decision upon discovering her that day. He’d never seen her before in his life, and she was a waif of a thing - but that something had been visible to him even then, and he was nothing if not decisive. Turning her had been the most viable option, and the outcome was hers to decide - her survival had been her choice.

“Today, I just want you to try. It’s the first step; knowing it’s possible, and then trying to replicate the feeling you get during the Moon. I’ll be here to look after you; nothing will hurt you, and you probably won’t remember anything when you turn back, if you’re successful.” He decided to omit the part that would inform her of how horrifically painful it was, but that was part of the unwilling transformation, too, so it could be assumed.

With his short spiel done, and his expectations laid out before her, Asher spread his arms as though to offer Audrey the floor, then stepped back a few yards and leaned nonchalantly against the closest wall. Though apparently relaxed, the man’s eyes were unwavering, perhaps unnerving, and he seemed to expect that she simply do as she was told without argument, despite the apparently gargantuan nature of her task.

The soothing words, and the dismissal of – something – had Audrey relaxing just slightly, her shoulders loosening, and she gave a small smile. She didn’t mind having goals or aspirations, but she didn’t like them when she wasn’t aware of them! Audrey didn’t like failing, whether the aspirations were her own or those of someone else – like her parents had for her during school, and now this Changing that Asher was talking of. Audrey bit her bottom lip, worrying it gently between her teeth as her alpha spoke; she tilted her head and considered.

Releasing her lip from between her teeth, Audrey quietly made her way to one side of the room, and gently placed her drink and handbag down, making sure they were out of the way of tripping and then returned to the more central spot of the room, where she’d been standing as Asher had explained what it was she was to attempt, and if she was lucky, accomplish. Audrey didn’t have very high hopes, but she would try to do as instructed – after all, that was all he was really asking of her.

Taking a deep breath in through her nose, Audrey settled lightly on the floor, crossing her legs and letting her shoulders slouch in a relaxed way, though she was still gnawing at her bottom lip as she went over – mentally – the process that had her Changing during the full moon. Despite her best efforts to relax, Audrey didn’t feel that feeling that came with the Change. She opened one eye and peered quizzically up at Asher, wondering if he had a secret sense of humour and this was some kind of initiation ritual the rest of the pack had failed to mention.

“I don’t think I’m doing it right,” she said after a long pause, twisting around to make sure her butt hadn’t sprouted a tail and holding her hands up spread fingered. She frowned, gave a huffy sigh at herself for her failure, and scrunched her eyes shut once more; This time, she focused as strongly as possible on imagining that the moon was full, shining in through the windows liquid light that forced her body to change so drastically from human to wolf. Then she felt a shiver run down the centre of her spine. “Oh!” she broke her concentration, and the sensation was gone as quickly as it had arrived. “I felt something!”

Asher found himself pleased at her intention to obey him, even as he watched the concern piece its way over her features. Though she was hesitant from her slow acceptance of the task to the skin that was likely torn from her lip in the process, she did it without goading. What “it” was seemed an ambiguous concept at this point, and yet there she was, setting her bag and her drink down and returning to sit in the middle of the spacious hall. He watched with pride - though whether that was in her or in his own ability to exert his will over others was almost entirely unclear.

The visual her one cautious eye collected would be no more than what it had been when she sat; Asher stood still, his posture apparently unchanged and laissez-faire. Of course, the truth of it was that he was tense - just apt at hiding it. He was prepared for the best and the worst, anticipation shallowing his breaths despite the lazy, expectant rise of his eyebrows-- which was the only retort to her wary gaze.

Apparently this was enough to get her to try again, and he watched as she wiggled her way back into concentration. Moments passed and his stare hardened, sure he could see something happening. And then it did - but it was over as fast as it had begun. A flash of understanding, a ripple of recognition- and then she snapped out of it, and the vibrations that Asher had been sure he was beginning to see on the surface of her flesh evened out and stopped. Disappointment flooded him - not that she couldn’t do it, but that she’d stopped it from happening - but he covered the emotion with a spark of excitement instead.
“That was definitely something,” he said, a smile coming easily to him as he approached. “I’ve never seen it before in someone so young. Do you want to try again? I’ll walk you through it this time, try to keep you focused.” This was the only concession that he made to noticing her fault, but if she was discerning it might have stood out to her.

Still, Asher came off as understanding - as identifying the problem not by pointing it out, but by immediately offering a solution. A good teacher, he thought, should always do this. Mistakes were only worth pointing out when humiliation was the end goal - here, he needed to build Audrey up, to boost her confidence. Maybe she wouldn’t enact a full transformation willingly after only six months of having been Turned, and what spark she’d already shown was, truly, more than he could have hoped for already. But he’d not gotten to where he was without a little persistance.

“Now,” he began, sitting down to face her and crossing his legs too, perhaps with surprising flexibility. “Close your eyes. Deep breaths.” He did it too, his spine straight and his hands laid loosely on his knees. “Imagine you’re in the forest. You can feel the grass if you touch your hands to the ground.” His fingers brushed the concrete floor, emitting gentle whispers of sound in the otherwise silent room. “You can smell the air after a fresh rain, the dirt and sap.” His voice echoed between them, and he took another deep breath. “It’s dark. Pitch dark; any sky you can see through the branches of the trees around you is deep navy, endless and all encompassing. There isn’t any cloud cover - if you step out from the canopy you know the Moon will bathe you in its light. Are you ready?” Asher paused, briefly opening one eye just in case her only response was to nod.

“You take one step. Two, three. By the time you get to five, your whole body is swathed in light, and it feels as strong as the sun used to - stronger. And it seeps into your pores, as though your skin is thirsty for it. Drink it up, let it burrow deep, let yourself absorb it. Absorb it and expand.” Then, anticipating a reaction that he might have to control, Asher opened his eyes - but he didn’t move, and he kept his breath even, pupils constricting as he focused intently on the skin of her forearms.

Audrey beamed at the recognition from Asher that she hadn’t imagined something had been happening, had been felt. She let the expression fall naturally as she watched Asher approach her position, and join her on the floor. Audrey took in a deep breath, as much as her lungs could hold, and released it slowly through parted lips. “Okay,” she agreed to try again, pursing her lips now and listening intently Asher began walking her though it.

Doing her best to turn her mind off, emptying it of all thought, she focused on the words Asher was speaking, trying to bring them to life in her mind’s eye. The image started out hazy and without clear cut edges, but as Asher spoke and Audrey let herself relax into the words, the scene he painted came alive in her mind. She could feel the way her skin was prickling up and down her arms, and a shudder traced down her spine. She focused on the glowing moon – she’d always loved the moon, even now when it caused her to Turn. Another shiver travelled through her, and she rolled her shoulders uncomfortably.

The shivering goosebumps on her arms intensified, and she could feel the little hairs all rise up, making her arms tingle. The sensation spread out across her whole body, racing down her back and then through her legs to her toes. Audrey’s eyes flashed open suddenly, and she gave a pained little gasp as the quiet intensity turned into an agonising ripple, the same that took over when the moon was truly full and her change was impossible to ignore. This, however, was a moon free afternoon – the image in her mind broke and Audrey gasped, panting slightly, and gave a full-body shudder.

“Oh wow.” She rolled her shoulders again, the goosebumps fading and leaving her just feeling tingly in the limbs. She lifted one hand to brush over her head, tugging on a lock of her ponytail as she considered everything. Audrey licked her lips to moisten them, before frowning at Asher. “How do you concentrate past the pain?” she asked, because she’d felt it and it had won that battle. Audrey pursed her lips as she waited for a reply, going over what had happened mentally once more.

The change, as far as Asher knew, began as a shiver, a tingle that became a vibration of the skin, which eventuated into that skin breaking apart in order to make room for the Wolf to emerge. As such - and with the knowledge of a veteran - he could see, in real time, the reactions of a body attempting to Turn. He could also see it in a body as it tried to resist an involuntary Turn and inevitably fail. Both looked similar in the beginning - it was the end result that differed here.
“Well done,” he breathed, gracing her with another of his easy smiles as she shook herself free of the pain and, consequently, the Change. “Very well done.”

Pain was something that the alpha was no stranger to, something that seemed as familiar to him as breathing. And having lived so long, it was easy to mingle pain and pleasure together, difficult to differentiate when he hadn’t been in pain, one way or another.
“Truthfully, it’s just something you learn to deal with.” Perhaps this was as open as he’d ever been with Audrey, though to say as much wasn’t to say much at all, considering that he’d barely spoken to her in her life - either as a human or a lycan. But these were words that showed more of him than he was comfortable with as a means of explaining a lesson - one that often came harshly with the reality of being any kind of shifter. People simply didn’t look at you the same.

Werewolves, in Asher’s experience, were considered the “icky” sort of magical, the painful, the aggressive, the unkind, the ugly. Vampires were the sexy ones, with their glamours and their scarless bodies. They didn’t know pain in the way that the wolves did - and this was, ironically, painfully obvious to Asher, who knew for a fact that for some of them, aesthetics were their top issue and priority. They were just as disgusting, if not worse - leeches who stuck their dicks in their victims. At least werewolves didn’t groom their prey. Alas, his biased thoughts aside, Asher shook his head and spoke once more.
“Meditation can help, I think it’d be a good idea if you started. Twice a day, morning and night, at least fifteen minutes. Not thinking about Turning, though, that could go south fast. Just your regular, clear your head kind of stuff.” It might have sounded like a suggestion, but the words held the undercurrent of a command, and something about his gaze suggested he’d know if she wasn’t sticking to the routine.

The praise was lovely, warm and encouraging. Audrey flashed a quick little smile in answer, but didn’t interrupt as Asher went on to explain about the pain. It wasn’t the answer she was hoping to hear, but it was the one that made the most sense. Of course, changing voluntarily would be painful, why shouldn’t it? Changing with the moon was an agony like nothing Audrey had ever felt before, or likely would feel elsewhere. Unless she managed to change on purpose. She took a deep breath in, feeling it help cleanse her mind and body, and breathed it out through her almost pursed lips.

Audrey scrunched her nose up intonationally at the instruction to take up meditation; she couldn’t think of anything more boring than sitting down and trying to think of nothing. Which of course, meant she would think of anything and everything else. But she nodded, nose still a little scrunched up, at the instructions, nonetheless. She wasn’t the type to cause trouble, and she honestly wanted to be able to change at her will, not just the will of the moon. Maybe she would be able to find another member of their pack that meditated, and she could join them in the daily routine. That sounded better than sitting alone somewhere.

“Okay,” she answered, because she would do as instructed, with or without company. Finding somewhere safe while she let her mind wander would be the most important thing; while she would be obedient and not attempt to Change during such sessions, it struck her as prudent to be somewhere where an accidental change wouldn’t wreak havoc – such as where she was now – rather than in the middle of the park.
