Chance reached over to the bedside table and grabbed his phone, tapping the screen so he could see the time.

He sighed and rested the phone on his bare chest. He had been awake for maybe five or so minutes and dreaded checking a clock for that entire time. With each day that brought them closer to spring, the changing of the clocks, and now moving on to summer, Chance knew his days were numbered. Soon the sun wouldn't set until nine and would rise before six. It was getting harder to make plans with his one and only friend outside of the Family--a friend he knew had sent the waiting text he was also still ignoring. How many excuses would he have to come up with now?
The winter months had been filled with moments he would cherish when Lyric inevitably cut ties with him due to always cancelling or being unavailable. It had been nice getting together even for dinner thanks to the longer nights. But it was the times they would get together to watch old movies and then discuss them after that had been a lot of fun--at least to him. Chance was fairly certain Lyric enjoyed it as well. He knew he was still odd for liking and relating to movies so much but she seemed to understand it was just who he was. Still, it would have been nice to be able to do more things with her. Activities normally done during the day because that's what humans did.
But he wasn't human anymore and he couldn't tell Lyric that. He knew she was a mage thanks to Ricky and Marco but they kept vetoing his ideas to tell her the truth. It was too risky, they said. She might freak out, they pointed out. She might get her dad to come after him or the Family, they reminded. Chance didn't think Lyric would do that. From what he knew of her, she was accepting and maybe she'd be worried at first but she'd remember how awkward and pathetic he was and wouldn't fear the idea of fangs after that.
The phone was finally lifted again--only two minutes having passed--and the message checked. Chance smiled at Lyric calling him Sleeping Beauty again. The first time she did that, he replied without thinking, asking if she was his Prince Charming. He'd been mortified once he heard the words leave his mouth but Lyric only answered 'yes' with a smile. He still wasn't sure how he felt about that.
He laughed when he saw the photo of the page of math problems she was stuck on and quickly sent a reply that he slept in and he'd help her in just a minute if she still needed it. He tossed the phone on the bed as he got up to change and grab a bag of blood so he could focus on the math instead of his hunger.

A few hours later, math was a distant memory and their chatting had started to fade since Lyric was getting ready for bed since she had school in the morning. Chance had discussed with Marco and Ricky during that time what he should do about the lengthening of the days and what excuse to give Lyric. Blaming it on his fictional job seemed best, especially since it was likely their sire would be calling him in soon to start doing some grunt work. He was nearly a year as a vampire and showed he was doing well in staying in control so he could start being of use to the Family.
I just heard from the boss that my hours are changing. Not sure for how long but I'll be starting earlier and ending in the middle of the night. I think the old movies might have to be paused for a bit. Unless you want to meet at like 3am to watch some from my collection lol
As soon as he sent the text, Chance had another moment of realising he spoke before thinking and quickly sent off another message.
Please don't agree to that! Your brother will kill me!
But the idea did have some merit and feeling bold, he sent one more text.
But maybe on one of my days off you can come over for a movie or two.
And then he lost his nerve, feeling embarrassed at thinking Lyric would want to do that so he sent yet one more text.

Chance waited a minute, then two, and decided Lyric had already fallen asleep or didn't know how to reply. He was about to tuck the phone away so he could focus on whatever random training his guardians had in mind that night when a reply came in.
