Edwin was having a hard time keeping the smile from his face as he made his way around the cute little store located downtown. He was thankful for Canada’s winter months falling dark as early as five in the evening so he could not only get more done in a night but also have a chance to shop at such stores. He supposed he should be thankful to the store’s owner as well for having extended holiday hours.

He admired the rows of pegs of handmade ornaments before plucking a few and setting them into his basket. Everything here was so charming and he’d been told that most of it was locally made by a small group of friends which added to the appeal. Some items they ordered in but they tried to keep to their aesthetic and he appreciated it as it seemed like perhaps it was becoming his own as well.

They already had the farmhouse decorated, having done it the previous week, but Edwin felt like it wasn’t enough. It was the Family’s first Christmas together, after all! He wanted everything to be perfect for his small group that had not only put their trust in him but also their well-being. He vowed to keep them all safe but he also wanted them happy and well-tended to, even if it was simply by having holiday cheer.

He reached a section that was filled with garland and immediately fell in love with the ones that had pine cones, sprigs of berries, and some red and green plaid ribbons. They would be perfect for the two fireplaces that had been decidedly lacking in decorations. The lone clerk came over and fussed over him and he counter-fussed, insisting he was fine but in the end, the woman took the garland from him to bring to the counter and urged him to go check out the wreaths.

By the time he finished in that section and made his way to the counter to pay, Edwin could no longer refrain from smiling. Everything was perfect and would add the final touches to the already wonderfully decorated home. He truly did love what Charlotte had decided to go with but in a way, it almost felt too modern and perfect. This would add a touch of homemade and cosiness. At least, he was hopeful the styles would blend well together.

Edwin left the shop with six large paper bags carrying his spoils. The weight didn’t bother him and there had unfortunately been a distinct lack of snow lately so the walk back to his vehicle was unencumbered. He added that to his list of things he was thankful for that night since he couldn’t get a parking spot near the store and had to walk a couple of blocks.

It turned out that was also a good thing as he spotted someone familiar walking by his car. He started to raise a hand to wave and chuckled when he saw the bags, simply calling out instead, “Miss Naomi!” Edwin increased his pace enough that he cut down the space between them in a handful of seconds and smiled at the woman. “It’s so good to see you again.”
