Overview The werewolf – or Lycan – is a human who has been cursed by the bite of a previous werewolf. Their curse takes hold approximately once a month when the moon is at the fullest. This can occur during the day or at night, contrary to popular belief. The transformation is incredibly painful, even for a veteran werewolf, and renders the cursed one into a true wolf, with no recollection of their humanity. They transform back to a human at the end of a twenty-four (24) hour period, naked and exhausted. The only time the curse can be transmitted is during the full moon, while the werewolf is in wolf form and lacking their humanity. They rarely actively hunt down human prey, but it has been known to happen. General Species Info

Packs Currently there are two packs within the region of Greenbrooke; the Green Brooke Pack and the Red Oaks Pack. Presently, the Green Brooke Pack is more open and welcoming, taking in strays that find themselves living in Greenebrooke and need a pack to call their own. Alternately, Red Oaks is more wary, distrustful, and primarily made up of those they have Turned themselves. History Unsurprisingly, their origin is traced back to the Greek gods. Proteus is known as the Old Man of the Sea that could foretell the future, but only if you were able to capture him and he would often change his form to various animals to help get out. He had a small sect of followers that asked him for his blessing when sailing on a river or entering a new phase in their life, believing it to be a reflection of how ever-changing the sea can be. Because of this worship and how none that named themselves a follower tried to capture him, Proteus granted them the power to shift into an animal. Each was given one form and told that their bloodline would always carry his boon. Things were a bit messy early into the life of the shifters as different species mated and the female rabbit shifter was now carrying the child of her bear mate. Rules weren't really in place with how genetics would work as Proteus didn't think that far ahead and, like most seers, he couldn't see his own future or that of those closely tied to him--like his followers. Hera stepped in once she noticed the chaos within marriages and during childbirths and adjusted the blessing to allow for mixed species relationships and the child will always take on the form of their mother. However, there's always someone that isn't happy with what they were given. The original wolf's bloodline eventually started breaking laws and trying to rise above their meagre existence with lofty goals of ruling as kings and queens or even gods. Lycaon, the cruel king of Arcadia, tried to trick Zeus into eating human flesh by serving up one of his own sons to the god. Zeus was not tricked and instead cursed Lycaon and his fifty sons to become their wolf form and unable to return to their human form. This removed the wolf from the realm of shifters for nearly two decades until Hera, once again stepping in, heard the pleas of the pitiful wolves as they howled at the moon, perhaps hoping for Artemis to assist them. Hera returned them to humans but denied them the ability to shift at will, binding their power to the phases of the moon they seemed so enraptured with. As the goddess of marriage and childbirth, she did not fully trust the men to have learned their lesson and denied them the ability to ever father children of the wolf again, allowing them to have human children. A by-product of her curse was the bite werewolves are famous for. In order to keep the wolf alive, they can change a human with a bite. However, female werewolves cannot become pregnant as another little piece of the original curse. Last Update: 2020.10.03 |
