Information

  • Shifting
    • It is not possible to do partial transformations.
    • Shifting is a painless and instant transformation.
    • Clothing can be a difficulty with shifting, and as such, many shifters will strip down to their underwear or even nakedness before shifting, if they do not have the funds to buy an enchanted bracelet or necklace that absorbs the clothing into it when shfiting, and releases them when a shifter changes back. This clothing could be magicked so that the shifter is re-dressed after shifting, or the clothing is spat into a pile and the shifter is left naked upon changing.
  • Cannot be Turned
    • It is not possible for a shifter to be turned into either a Vampire or a Werewolf.
  • Full Moon
    • While the Full Moon doesn't transform a shifter like it does werewolves, the undeniable pull to shift is there, and will cause Shifters to feel antsy and go stir crazy if they don't shift and enjoy the night. Many go hunting or just frolicking in the woods.
  • Enhanced Traits
    • Shifters have enhanced strength, speed, agility and vision, much better than humans and sometimes, even on par with some vampires.
  • Weakness to Silver
    • Silver causes weakness, making a Shifter more docile. Many young shifters wear a piece of silver jewellery to help them keep their temper in check and avoid shifting in public from spiked emotions.Too much silver (such as full chains) will leave a Shifter as weak as a newborn kitten. Removing the silver will give a slight reprive, but it will take time to fully recover one's strength.
  • Communication
    • It is not possible to speak while in animal form, though it is possible to understand other members of that shifter's animal class through natural communication methods, such as barking, meowing, and body language.

History

Unsurprisingly, their origin is traced back to the Greek gods. Proteus is known as the Old Man of the Sea that could foretell the future, but only if you were able to capture him and he would often change his form to various animals to help get out. He had a small sect of followers that asked him for his blessing when sailing on a river or entering a new phase in their life, believing it to be a reflection of how ever-changing the sea can be. Because of this worship and how none that named themselves a follower tried to capture him, Proteus granted them the power to shift into an animal. Each was given one form and told that their bloodline would always carry his boon.

Things were a bit messy early into the life of the shifters as different species mated and the female rabbit shifter was now carrying the child of her bear mate. Rules weren't really in place with how genetics would work as Proteus didn't think that far ahead and, like most seers, he couldn't see his own future or that of those closely tied to him--like his followers. Hera stepped in once she noticed the chaos within marriages and during childbirths and adjusted the blessing to allow for mixed species relationships and the child will always take on the form of their mother.

However, there's always someone that isn't happy with what they were given. The original wolf's bloodline eventually started breaking laws and trying to rise above their meagre existence with lofty goals of ruling as kings and queens or even gods. Lycaon, the cruel king of Arcadia, tried to trick Zeus into eating human flesh by serving up one of his own sons to the god. Zeus was not tricked and instead cursed Lycaon and his fifty sons to become their wolf form and unable to return to their human form. This removed the wolf from the realm of shifters for nearly two decades until Hera, once again stepping in, heard the pleas of the pitiful wolves as they howled at the moon, perhaps hoping for Artemis to assist them.

Hera returned them to humans but denied them the ability to shift at will, binding their power to the phases of the moon they seemed so enraptured with. As the goddess of marriage and childbirth, she did not fully trust the men to have learned their lesson and denied them the ability to ever father children of the wolf again, allowing them to have human children. A by-product of her curse was the bite werewolves are famous for. In order to keep the wolf alive, they can change a human with a bite. However, female werewolves cannot become pregnant as another little piece of the original curse.
