Communitees Seelie Court: in short, these are the nicer fae. They can still be very dangerous but they’re the more agreeable type you’d want to come across. They also are often called the light fae. Unseelie Court: The more malevolent type. Given that one of their translations is ‘unholy’, they often end up being labelled as demons by humans, especially those that are not preternaturally aware. They also go by the dark fae. They live in the sub realms of Otherworld, usually in the more barren or rougher climates and even far beneath the ground; something that only adds to their demon association. For specific species, essentially anything goes so long as they can blend into society. Whether this is by their standard appearance, possessing a glamour much like vampires, or purchasing a glamour (at a high cost and would only last a certain timeframe depending on quality). History The fae folk come from what most on earth would call the Otherworld which is on another plane of existence and connects to ours via portals*. They are where magic originated, though many now believe magic has simply always existed with no true point of origin. If some believe it came from the fae, they will likely also say the fae have died out or returned home; the latter of which is correct. During the Mechanical Age (1450-1840) the fae began to disappear. There was no exodus that would draw the attention of so many leaving the world but simply fae slowly vanishing in the night and never returning as they grew tired of the way in which the world was moving. Humans were growing less superstitious and believed in magic less as they turned toward technology and science, making it harder to exist. The amount of iron that was now getting more and more in their way was also a turn off and the fae simply didn’t want to slip into obscurity as they tried to hide their nature. Eventually the portals were all sealed and those that had remained became earthbound and took to living as humans or mages. *Portals: Traditionally there are major portals all over the world that are guarded on both sides to ensure that they stay closed. They are hard to see if you aren’t looking for them as they only have a slight shimmering to the air, though they are usually situated between a pair of ancient trees. In years long gone, it was possible for a preternatural mundane to accidentally wander into one and never return which accounts for many unexplained disappearances. Since closing down or ‘turning the power off’, they still shimmer but require fae of royal lineage or strong mages of a purer bloodline to reactivate them. Portal guardians vary depending on location and the side of the barrier they are on. The one in Greenbrooke is located on the outskirts in a small forested area still untouched by city developers as it sits on private property. A cabin is also on the property and not too far away from the portal so the guardian doesn’t have to stand constantly beside it. Of course there are always ways to cross the border if determined enough and with enough money. Private portals can be arranged, like what mages do from one location to another upon earth. Private portals to Otherworld cost a lot and can be unreliable as they aren’t anchored on the other side so there’s no guarantee where you will land. They’re also illegal for this reason so using one comes with its risks as either side could detect an unauthorized use of one. Last Update: 2021.07.28 |
