Cody pranced around the backyard of his family’s home as he took turns chasing his little twin siblings Emma and Ethan. He liked the city well enough but in times like this, he was glad they lived further out and had a large yard with neighbours spread out. He could only imagine how much noise three bear cubs were making and what a neighbour right up against their fence would think. The thought of what their faces would look like as they saw a sleuth of bears roaming free always made him giggle though!

After letting Ethan tackle him while Emma danced around them in victory, Cody nudged his brother to go after their sister and he rumbled with laughter as the two darted off to play their next game. He trotted over to the patio where his best friend Lyric sat curled up on one of the outdoor couches. All of their patio furniture was custom made—large, sturdy, and built for bears bumping into it or climbing upon. He did the climbing, giving himself a running start as he leapt at the structure, his little back legs dangling a moment before pulling himself all of the way up.

He gave an accomplished grunt before settling in next to Lyric, his head resting on her lap. She sometimes joined in chasing them around but Cody had warned her the Es were full of chaotic energy that evening and decided it was better for her to sit it out for a bit. She was always good for a nap, though! He was eight years older than the twins but not that much larger in his bear form and all of that playing had worn him out. He gave a yawn to prove his point as he glanced up at his friend.

His parents had gone to the cottage for the weekend, needing some alone time away from the kids and the mundanes’ view on polyamorous relationships. He thought it was cool that his mom’s heart was large enough to love three men and hoped he found such love one day. But that left him baby-sitting the Es and he naturally roped Lyric into it as well. At least for the evening. Her hot and grumpy brother would pick her up in a few hours but that left plenty of time to hang out and catch up. Well, when he could talk again. He wasn’t in a hurry to change back and knew Lyric would carry a conversation herself, giving him a chance to nod or react if needed.

Lyric looked up, curiously, when the sound of playing bear cubs changed, and grinned brightly as she watched Cody take a running start, landing on the seat beside her with absolutely no grace, scrambling to climb up on it. She giggled, putting down her pen to pat him on the head gently as it rested across her lap, uncaring about the homework she was working on. She didn’t mind. Of course, her homework was important and needed to be completed – preferably before Noct came to pick her up – but she was about half done and pretty pleased with it overall. If it wasn’t completed, though, her grades could slip and if her grades slipped, her dancing would be at risk. Papa was tough, but fair, and Lyric wasn’t about to risk her dancing for anything.

“Tired?” She teased, scratching Cody behind one ear as he yawned, enjoying the feel of the heavy bear fur. So soft! “They really are full of the devil today, aren’t they? Are you sure you’ll be okay alone with them this evening?” Honestly, she knew he would be, and she knew Noct would never let her stay after dark – Papa would kill him – but it was polite to ask and she was genuinely interested. Hopefully they’d wear themselves out playing, though, and Cody would be able to put them down to sleep the night away without too much hassle… She pouted for a moment, wishing she could do more to help her friend, before sighing and carefully moving her homework out from under his chin.

“I’ve almost finished,” she sighed again, putting her things away. She could finish the rest when she got home that night. At least it wasn’t math! Lyric hated math, and found it nigh impossible to do more than the most simple of addition and subtraction. Which meant she was often drowning in mathematical homework. “I’ll do the rest at home. Are you going to stay that way?” She asked curiously, her tone completely at ease and with no malice – she didn’t mind if he stayed in bear form, she just wanted to know – and scratched behind his ear again. “If you are, you should let me up so I can practice some of my dance.” So much more fun than her homework! And just as important, at least to Lyric.

Cody rolled onto his back so Lyric could rub his belly while he gave her his best sad bear eyes. That was one downside to his current form—he wasn’t nearly as expressive. He made do with what he had and tried pouting all the same, knowing it really didn’t do anything and he had to rely more on his eyes. He debated staying as a cub but if they weren’t going to nap, then it would be easier to communicate with Lyric as a human.

Eventually he pawed lightly at her hand—one of their signals for shifting—but didn’t scurry away as he changed back, his now human head resting in Lyric’s lap and body stretching out along the seat. He was clothed, thanks to the enchanted necklace that phased his clothing off and on again with shifts, though he had no idea how it technically worked since magic was beyond him. Math? He was a whiz at that thanks to his dad but magic seemed complicated.

“But what if I don’t get up?” He grinned as he spoke, waiting a few seconds more before finally sitting up. He drew his legs up to sit more comfortably as he watched his siblings for a moment, ensuring they were still behaving as best as eight year olds that could turn into bear cubs could. “And we’ll be fine. They’ll calm down soon and I’ll send them off for baths before we watch a movie.”

He yawned, wondering if he would make it through a movie himself. He hated when history was his last class of a Friday, convinced that it drained away all of his energy in an attempt to ruin his weekend. Of course running around the yard for an extended length of time didn’t help either but at least that was fun! Lyric was due some fun now as well and he nudged her with his shoulder. “You’ve been frowning at homework for too long. Time to dance!”

Lyric shook her head, amused, and carefully finished packing away her school supplies. “Your pout is getting better,” she teased playfully, sticking out her own bottom lip and giving Cody sad eyes before giggling. She wasn’t really sure if that was true, or she was just getting that much better at reading the mood of her friend when he was in his bear form. Probably it just had more to do with knowing Cody regardless of what form he was in.

Laughter easily came to Lyric as she watched Cody yawn, nearly reading his mind as she shook her head, long hair rippling against her shoulders. “Good luck,” she said fondly, amused. If it wasn’t the Es causing Cody trouble, it was his deep love of naps! She could just imagine Cody waking up to markers having left their ink all over his face, or heavens knew what other mischief the Es could get up to when his eyes were closed. She grinned.

“Stretching first,” Lyric corrected in a mock serious tone, waggling her finger in a tut-tut motion as she slid easily off the seat and bounced a couple of times on the balls of her feet. She pulled her hoodie off, tossing it onto the seat so she was left in her cute Autumn dress and tights. Lyric always wore tights – different colours, different patterns – because she so often found an excuse to dance. It was just more dignified to have pants on when her dresses ended up falling in the wrong direction! She toed off her shoes, and socks, knowing Papa would be upset if she ruined another pair with grass stains.

Falling into the easy routine of stretching, Lyric babbled to Cody about her upcoming recital – which he knew everything about, already – and her hopes for it. She was excited, as she had her own little solo (everyone did) and was both nervous and excited about it. She’d done very few solos, and never at such a big recital as the one that was coming up. She was nervous, but excitedly so!

Once she’d finished stretching, Lyric flashed Cody a shy smile and fell into the routine of her solo piece, stopping occasionally to repeat a section she wasn’t happy with, before moving on to the next portion of the dance.

Cody smiled and watched his friend as if she were at the actual performance. He loved watching someone do what they loved no matter what it was—well, maybe some exceptions like violence—and he did his best to encourage them and show his interest with questions or compliments. This dance was no different as he nodded and pointed out her kick seemed higher and straighter than the previous round while also sometimes pulling some of the poses from where he sat on the bench.

The twins bounded over after several minutes and sat to the side watching the show as well. Ethan was the first to join in, standing on his hind legs and doing a little back and forth hopping dance. Cody started giggling and soon Emma was joining in as well. It seemed dancer appreciation and curiosity ran in the family as a memory struck him.

“It’s like our first meeting! Except you’re a bit taller and there’s two bears.” Young Cody had ventured a bit too far into the wooded area behind their property and ended up in a new neighbourhood where he heard laughter and singing. After scrambling through an almost too small hole in the fence, Cody-bear found a young girl dancing around the yard with an older boy sometimes glancing out the kitchen window while he made dinner for them.

Forgetting himself, he had slipped out from behind the tree and started wobbling around like his little siblings now did, wanting to dance with the happy girl.

“I’m starting to think your power lies in charming wild beasts with dance,” Cody joked, not even sure or worried if that was even possible in any school of magic. Though, maybe he should look into that just in case. It would suck if it worked on shifters and he was lured away by an evil mage!

Lyric laughed as the twins started dancing with her, and she changed her style to match, bouncing around on the balls of her feet, occasionally doing a cartwheel or flip; her laughter was reignited when Cody mentioned it was like their first meeting. “You’re right!” she giggled, brushing stray hairs out of her face and flopping down on the seat beside Cody once more.

“I think that would make me a Disney Princess,” Lyric grinned, giggling behind her hand. “But I do prefer charming flowers to bears,” she said easily, wiggling her fingers as if a vine might sprout up from the palm of her hand. “I don’t think Papa would like it very much if I was bringing home wild animals instead of flowers,” she admitted, grinning at the idea of her beloved Papa’s face if she happened to bring home stray deer or a baby moose instead of the various flowers she was prone to collecting when she went hiking in the nearby forest.

Turning a mischievous look on Cody, Lyric picked up her school work. “What goodies did your dad leave in the kitchen?” She asked quietly, her voice low so the Es wouldn’t easily overhear. Children always wanted to eat what everyone else was eating, and while Lyric would get growled at for spoiling her own appetite, she didn’t want to ruin the kids’. All they had to do was wrangle them into the bath, or in front of a movie. Only. Lyric grinned.

“You’re already a Disney character so you’re almost there!” The other part of that vivid memory of their meeting wasn’t nearly as cute and fun. Nocturne had come outside and big brother was pretty accurate with his knife tossing as he proved with one landing in the ground inches from Cody’s paw. Cody had scrambled behind the tree while Noct had ordered him to change back, citing a normal bear wouldn’t be dancing with a kid and he had better be a good guy. Cody shifted, hands held above his head and pleading he was definitely a good guy. After an interrogation, Noct deemed him safe enough and he was even called Pooh Bear to go with Lyric’s Piglet.

“Oh! Some good stuff. Pretty basic considering but I’ll show you. C’mon, kiddos. Bath time and then a movie mostly of your choice!” Cody jumped to his feet and shooed the twins toward the door, both shifting back as he they reached it and Emma letting them in. They were good kids but sometimes their energy over took them and they could be a handful. But he didn’t mind those times either—or when they started bickering about what movie to watch. He’d let them duke it out in the bath.

Once they were off starting up the baths—he’d check on them soon—Cody led Lyric to the kitchen and showed her the stacks of containers. “Butter tarts, three kinds of cookies, brownies, and some oatmeal granola bar thing that he said is for you. I forgot about it earlier,” he gave a large and slightly embarrassed grin as he slid that container over. “He figured you would be here enough this weekend to warrant your own snack.” It still broke Cody’s heart that Lyric was so dedicated to eating wisely and missing out on so much sugary goodness.

“You can take it home and share with Noct if you want.” For one thing, Lyric’s schedule was always full and probably wouldn’t be able to come by as much as either would like. For another… he wasn’t immune to her brother’s looks either. It would totally be weird to hook up with his bestie’s older brother but Cody was happy to look and offer him snacks his pastry chef dad made from time to time.

Lyric snorted, shaking her head. Of all the Disney characters, she still thought she was the least like Piglet! The little pink character was such a fraidy-cat, always frightened by something. Lyric was almost positive she wasn’t as afraid of life as was Piglet, and was glad that she hadn’t grown up to be the Piglet her brother had named her after when she was just a newborn infant.

A bright smile lit her face up as the children were wrangled into the bath; Lyric knew from experience that the bathroom would also be getting a bath that evening. Almost skipping, she followed Cody back to the kitchen, clapping her hands excitedly as he list off what was available. “Ooh,” she cooed, excitedly taking the container, cracking open a corner to peek in, smelling it with delight. “Yummy! Thanks!” She giggled, putting it aside, and opened the brownie container. She tilted it this way and that, eyeing the pieces, before carefully picking out an obviously small piece. “Your dad is so mean,” she sighed, before biting into the piece of sinfully delicious brownie.

Lyric licked her fingers clean when she finished the treat. She sighed happily; she rarely ate anything that wasn’t part of her carefully structured menu. But when she did, it was almost always a treat she managed to sneak in while visiting Cody. Her portion was always small, but it was still something! Something too delicious to ignore. “Mm, I might,” she smiled, bouncing up to sit on the edge of the counter, toeing her shoes off to clomp onto the floor; she pulled her legs up under her, crossing them and planting her elbows in the corners of her knees. “He’s not having any of my granola!”

Leaning over slightly, Lyric collected the container with the butter tarts, and popped the lid. “Some of these. If he doesn’t eat them, Papa will.” Butter tarts were a family favourite, and would certainly not go amiss. Opening her granola container, she carefully set two butter tarts inside. “What kind of cookies do you have?” She suddenly burst into laughing, “Noct thought those last ones were chocolate chip. I’ve never seen him spit food out like that, when he bit into a chunky raisin cookie. Wish I’d known it was going to happen! It would have bene glorious blackmail.” She smirked mischievously.

"I think there's peanut butter, ginger snaps, and I made the chocolate chip with him last night!" It was more Cody made the cookies while his dad finished decorating a cake that had been ordered for a Friday event but it still counted. He loved working in the kitchen when his dad was in there. They chatted about everything and Cody just loved the vibe of it all.

"Oh no! I thought he liked raisins," Cody pouted when he heard the tale though he was quickly smiling and giggling, imagining the look that Nocturne likely gave. "The butter tarts are sometimes raisins, you know. Maybe it's situational? I saw a shirt at the thrift store that said 'stupid raisins, get out of my cookie' so maybe he only likes them sometimes or when he's expecting them?" People could be weird when it came to food and he wasn't one to judge them for it.

"Be right back," Cody announced when he heard the water stop in the bathroom. He went to check on his siblings and then returned when he was satisfied a water battle wouldn't break out. Given the promise of a movie, he knew they would behave--or at least keep the war small and clean up.

He returned and went back to work on preparing two identical plates of the snacks. They were pretty good at sharing but he was spoiling them tonight. Two bottles of ginger ale came out of the fridge next and he was now the best big brother ever for the next two hours before sending them to bed.

He poured himself a glass of berry-pomegranate juice and joined Lyric on the counter. He took a sip and then offered her the glass to wash down the treat. She was practically family and was allowed to help herself to anything but being Lyric, she was usually too polite to do so. "Is Noct coming soon or can you stay for the movie? He can stay as well. I'm sure he's not sick of Disney movies just yet."

Lyric laughed, and shook her head. “No one likes raisins when they expected chocolate!” she teased, sticking her tongue out at Cody as he pouted for a moment. She laughed again as he suddenly seemed to remember the Es, and took off to check on them. Lyric took the opportunity to open the container with her granola in it, and inhaled deeply; oh so good! The best bit was, Cody’s dad had asked about her particular diet ages ago, and she knew he took careful pains to make sure the snacks he made her complied with the rigid menu. Lyric broke off a corner of one piece, and popped it in her mouth just as Cody returned.

“This is so good,” she murmured around her mouthful, hiding her smile behind her hand so Cody wasn’t given a view of masticated granola. She watched with her usual curiosity as the twins were set up, and then she was joined by her friend. Lyric took the glass with a small smile, sipping a couple of mouthfuls, and setting the glass down in the gap of benchtop between herself and Cody. “I’m not sure,” Lyric admitted. She couldn’t remember if Noct had given a timeframe he’d be by to pick her up, or not. Usually he did, but if he was going to be busy he sometimes forgot. Or she could have simply not heard him in her excitement to walk home with Cody after school. Probably it was the latter, and she checked her watch to see what the time was.

“He’ll probably get here as soon as I’m comfortable,” Lyric mused, “but if I wait on him, he’ll not be here until the end of the movie.” That was the law of the universe, right? “So might as well get comfortable and just hope he takes his time. Tomorrow is Saturday and I’ve done most of my homework so there really isn’t any need for him to rush to pick me up, and he knows it.” Although Papa could get a bit over protective and might send Nocturne to pick her up when he decided it was late enough, which could be any time at all. “What did they pick?” she asked, genuinely curious now that she was going to be watching at least the opening arc.

"Probably one of the new Star Wars to be honest," Cody wrinkled his nose in distaste. He liked the original trilogy but all of the movies since then didn't capture the same spirit of the franchise or were just plain bad. But the Es loved them right now so he was ready for some more brooding Kylo Ren once they were out of the tub. "I'm still trying to get them into the love of Newsies. Baby Christian Bale is so cute!" He swooned dramatically against the cupboard. He was still working on getting their drama department to put on a performance of it as well. It was his goal before he graduated.

After a few minutes he heard the twins get out of the tub and finally emerge in their jammies and he waved to their snacks as he got down from the counter. "Grab anything else you want, Ly," he called over his shoulder as he drove back into the fridge to find the bowl of cherries he had hidden away--though he would definitely be getting into the desserts in a bit as well.

He started laughing as he heard the Star Wars intro and topped up the glass of juice. "We don't want to miss the scrolling story and be lost!" He led the way to the family room that held a lot of comfortable furniture and a TV that was far larger than anyone really needed but two of his dads loved sports and movies enough that they got their way.

Lyric’s nose scrunched up delicately at the admittance of the likely moving being Star Wars. She wasn’t particularly fond of any of the movies, not even the original trilogy which most people seemed to enjoy. She found them all very long and boring; watching with Cody would at least be more fun than soldiering through them with her own family. At least it was more likely he would fall asleep than tease her for doing so!

She was interrupted from her musing at Cody swooning over Christian Bale – baby Christian Bale – and laughed softly at him. Unlike her friend, Lyric hadn’t really hit the stage yet where she found people swoon-worthy, which was probably a great relief to both her father and brother (she’d never asked, and didn’t plan to). It was probably good for the people she’d swoon over, too. She didn’t think facing down either man would be a lot of fun… Her name startled her, and she grinned at Cody’s back as she hopped agilely off the counter top.

Lyric grabbed an apple, and then dove into the fridge herself to rummage around, appearing a moment later with a couple of carrots, a stick of celery, and some dip that definitely looked home-made (of course!) and smelled divine when she lifted the lid. A good guest would cut up the vegetables into bite size pieces and not double-dip, but Lyric had long stopped being a good house guest. She would be double dipping until Noct came to steal her away. And even then, she might take the rest of the dip, too! It didn’t seem the type of thing Cody, or the Es, would miss.

The sound of Star Wars had Lyric scrunching her nose up again, but smiling at Cody with a shake of her head as she followed him into the living room. Setting her stuff down on the coffee table, Lyric motioned for Emma to come over to her; the girl sitting on a cushion at Lyric’s feet, and handing her the hairbrush she’d brought over. Lyric settled on the edge of the seat, and carefully brushed through Emma’s hair as the girl fixated on the movie. Once she’d finished brushing it, Lyric braided the younger girl’s hair and then let her move off to sit on the couch with her brother.

“I’m not sure, but I think Noct missed his calling playing… broody mcbroody,” Lyric whispered, unable to recall the character’s name at the moment, as she leaned over close to Cody so as not to interrupt the avidly watching twins.

“He’s not that bad! I’ve seen him smile,” Cody replied back on a slightly louder whisper due to trying not to laugh. Poor Nocturne was getting shredded tonight and he wasn’t even around to defend himself. His ears were probably on fire as well. That still didn’t save him from more pot shots as the movie went on and they were able to compare him to various characters while also debating who they would be in that universe.

By the time the moving was nearing its conclusion, Cody had two drooping kids that were ready for bed and Lyric curled up with him in the love seat that looked to be slowly devouring them with how far they had sunk down into it. Cody debated just letting everyone sleep right where they were when the doorbell rang, startling all of them.

“I bet that’s for you,” he yawned and blinked back the sleepiness trying to snag him. He got up and helped Lyric up while also telling her to leave the dishes. He’d clean up after he got the twins to bed which would come after getting Lyric to her brother.

A quick peek outside confirmed Noct was waiting on the porch and Cody greeted him, waving him inside while Lyric got all of her things together. “Text me if you have free time and want to come back over any time this weekend. It’s just the Es and me till Sunday night,” he told Lyric when she seemed ready to go.

Lyric giggled quietly behind her hand, trying not to disturb the twins who were clearly enraptured by the current movie choice. The whispered quips she swapped with Cody throughout were far more entertaining to Lyric, and her soft laughter often came forth at inappropriate times in the movie. If it bothered the Es, they didn’t make a show of it.

The doorbell was like her morning alarm, startling Lyric into wakefulness and she stared, startled, towards it. “Yeah,” she agreed, blinking as her mind came back into working mode. She’d almost forgotten that Noct would be picking her up. A glance at her watch had her blinking a couple of times in surprise: it was a lot later than she’d expected! Almost late enough that if Nocturne hadn’t rung the bell she would have been staying the night. Which Papa wouldn’t have liked! Especially with Cody’s parents all away. He was still edgy about just letting her come around in the afternoons, he’d yet to allow her to stay the night. Lyric yawned as she unfolded herself from the couch and moved about to find her things.

Lyric hid another huge yawn behind her hand as she swung her school backpack over her shoulders, and settled it after pulling out and putting on her jacket. It was going to be ever so chilly on the bike, but at least she’d be shielded by Nocturne. “Will do!” She promised, grabbing Cody in a quick, tight hug and giving him a kiss on the cheek before trudging over to Nocturne, and giving him a quick hug and kiss on the cheek, snuggling against her brother for a moment with another yawn. “I might fall off I’m so tired,” she mumbled, pouting up at him. “I appreciate the extra time, but whatever kept your attention so late?” She asked, blinking at Noct with a puzzled smile.

“I was working on my needlepoint pillow for my couch,” Noct replied straight-faced and without a hint of sarcasm. It was what made him so good at tossing out sharp comments—it was hard to tell when he was serious or not. He couldn’t wait for Lyric to start dating so he could use it on the boys she tried to go out with. He’d know when the perfect boy for her came along when the kid could take his humour in stride but still take threats to heart and treat Lyric well.

“Don’t start questioning when you get a bit more freedom or I’ll have to start following you everywhere to make up for my kindness. Besides, it’s rude to break up Piglet and Pooh’s time together,” he grinned as he wrapped an arm around his sister’s shoulders to keep her from squirming away and complaining about the nickname he refused to ever give up. It wasn’t his fault she looked like Piglet when she was born and it wasn’t his fault a tubby baby bear befriended her either. He just called it like he saw it.

“Thanks for keeping her out of my hair for an evening, Cody.” Not that he ever actually minded spending time with Lyric. He also didn’t do anything exciting with his free time that night. He drove around the city looking for places and activities that caught his eye and snapped photos and then did a quick review while sitting on a café’s patio sipping on some fall-branded tea. He had a feeling it was supposed to be pumpkin spice—since everything that time of year was—but it was kind of bland and not worth ordering again.

With those trains of thoughts colliding, Noct nudged Lyric toward the door, “let’s get you home before Pops figures out how to turn you into a pumpkin.”

Lyric stuck her tongue out at Nocturne, legitimately unsure if he was being sarcastic or not, and not wanting to let it be known. For all she knew, he was being serious, and honestly, she wouldn’t put it past him to have been working on his needlepoint. Or knitting. Or who knew what side project he might have going on at any given time. Her brother was an enigma, and she knew it.

“Papa wouldn’t turn me into a pumpkin!” Lyric objected, frowning up at Nocturne. “He might turn you into one, though!” She grinned, impish and playful despite her tiredness. If anyone was going to get an earful for her being at Cody’s place so late, it was going to be Nocturne. He was responsible for her, after all.

“I’ll see you later,” Lyric called, waving at Cody as she was herded to the roadside curb. “At school if not sooner!”
