Jeans and a dress shirt adorned the man’s broad frame as he sat, hunched over the bar, an outsider amongst the many gyrating bodies of the Masquerade Nightclub. Asher looked better suited to a side-alley, hole-in-the-wall kind of place, the sort that ran football on a T.V. and didn’t have any kind of dance floor or stage. But he was here for a reason, and if he had to be a little uncomfortable and out of place, then so be it.

Raising his arm to signal the bartender, he held up two fingers and pointed to his tumbler, assuming that the staff would know he meant he’d like another double. He’d been there for a half-hour already, drank enough to run up a tab, and though the place was bustling with activity, he’d been steadily earning his lonesome place on the only corner of the bar that was no longer sticky. By now they knew his preference in bourbon, and it was brought to him not too long after the gestured request. In the meantime, though, he was scanning the crowd.

Occasionally, his hazel eyes would pause on one body or another, their depths sparking with what might have been intrigue or desire, but he never moved to fulfil whatever it was he saw.

Moments later he’d return to his drink, filled whilst he ignored whoever poured it. Asher drank with a measured patience, as though the amber liquid was some kind of elixir that would give him the answers to the questions he posed of the ignorant crowd, and swilled the glass at regular intervals. Everything he did was slow and considered - quite the contrast to the people who milled around him. Still, whether or not he stood out was likely predicated on how much one had to drink - which, by the looks of it, meant that he’d draw no more attention than a shadow on the wall for the rest of the night. Or so he thought.

Apparently he had only partially learned his lesson. He hadn’t returned to Indulge since his nearly disastrous first visit nor had he seen Jasper or Rafe again; though he was certain he was being watched. Yet there he was walking through the front door of the club that shifters preferred to congregate at. He knew they were still a dangerous bunch but in his mind, they were the safer option.

He’d also never been to Masquerade before and wanted to try something new. So there was that fact guiding his feet to the bar as well. As he approached, Nocturne weaved through the throng of bodies until he came out at a section of the bar that didn’t have a gaggle of people pressed up against it. Maybe it had something to do with mister tall, dark, and broody sitting there. Whatever, not like he was going to let that stop him from ordering a beer. Besides, as he stepped up, Nocturne noticed he should definitely add ‘sexy’ to the list of adjectives for the man. Nice. Very nice.

But first a drink. He ordered a Guinness, figuring that was a safe middle of the road option. He may have been at the club to try new things but experimenting with drinks wasn’t on the list that night. As the tall glass was placed before him. Nocturne spotted the shamrock in the head and smirked as he fished out a bill, making sure it was enough to cover the drink and a tip. The girl was busy but she still had time to pour a proper Guinness and he respected that.

Turning to face the crowd, Nocturne leaned back against the bar and took a drink. Perfect. The drink and good music was just what he needed that night. All that was missing was a dance partner but that could wait a bit longer until his beer was done. Instead he cast a glance at the man near him and casually asked, “is it the actual glower that’s keeping you solo tonight or the ‘don’t fuck with me’ vibes you’re sending off in waves?”

Asher had been sipping diligently from his drink once more as a younger man came to take advantage of the aura he’d secured around his little patch of bar. Interesting that someone should do so, but not notable until he actually spoke.

Smirking behind the wiry mass of his beard, the alpha set his glass down and looked over, briefly considering Nocturne before letting his posture bend back over his glass.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he began, using the blunt tip of one of his nails to run over the raised design at the base of his tumbler. “But if it were either, it looks as though they don’t work on you.” For a moment, Asher considered adding some venom to the retort, but he figured leaving the threats to a minimum for now would allow him to get a better idea of who this person was. Best not to scare him off immediately - there had to be something interesting about him if he was willing to approach a scary-looking old man in a bar who clearly wanted nothing to do with anyone.

The old man in question took another sip of his bourbon, then set down an empty glass. Another gesture, another double shot. He considered saying more, asking questions, but in the past he’d found of strangers that they tended to offer a little more when left to their own devices. Being pushy made for a creepy stranger, but leaving open ends to sentences and allowing them their own navigation through the conversation somehow seemed to make people more comfortable; more open.

This wasn’t knowledge that Asher had come upon naturally; his skill for reading people was learned rather than innate, but he used it to its full potential whenever he could. And for now, he’d stopped casting his gaze out across the crowd - maybe his prey had come right to him. He considered himself good enough of a hunter for this to be possible, after all.

At the denial, Nocturne gave a soft snort as he glanced at the space that surrounded them. He was known to pull off such a vibe from time to time but it didn't work nearly as well as it did with this man. It made him wonder who he was dealing with, especially since the longer he took in the man's face, the more he swore he should know it.

"I'm not exactly normal and I'm not currently known for making the wisest of decisions," Nocturne replied with a grin and a small salute of his glass before another drink. This man was definitely classified as a bad decision yet there he still stood instead of walking away to dance and flirt. He hadn't missed the girl that kept looking his way and nudging her friend to no doubt talk about him. They could be fun companions for the evening but perhaps also too easy and... normal. New experiences was the aim of the night after all.

"You don't seem the sort to dance with reckless abandon so why come to a night club known for it to sit and drink while glaring at the crowd?" Other than the fact he was probably a shifter and Masquerade was a safe space for them to let their guards down for a bit. He could just be a thrill seeker as well, whether he knew about shifters or not. Noct was leaning toward the former.

Though currently undeniably human, Asher’s ears pricked at these first words.
“Not normal? What do you mean by that, exactly?” He didn’t let himself sound too intrigued; in fact, the words came condescendingly almost, as though he was goading the younger man, as if to ask just what exactly was so special about him. It was just as likely that Nocturne was simply making reference to his own uniqueness - Asher had noticed, over the many years of his life, that humans didn’t like to be considered one of many. Even though most of them were.

That said, there was something interesting about this guy - he just wasn’t sure what.

“Do you often go into bars and demand the intentions of strangers?” Though not by any means bored by Nocturne, Asher certainly sounded it. He could be a good actor when he wanted to be. If his company continued to stick around through this, maybe he’d actually be worth talking to. Naturally, Asher had to make him run the gauntlet, first. “I just haven’t found a nice quiet place to drink that I like yet, alright? And this club serves nice bourbon.” Which, as he mentioned it, was poured by a lovely, smiling lady. Asher flashed his teeth at her, and her sweetness turned to discomfit. Ah, he never did have too much of a way with the ladies, and he did so struggle swinging between likeable and not.

He let the lie hang between them as he sipped from his glass, truly curious as to whether or not the other man would continue to push him by calling it out.

Again, Nocturne only replied with a lopsided cheeky grin as his companion demanded to know why he wasn’t normal. Didn’t most people like to think they meandered to the beat of a different drummer? He knew he did with a lot of his hobbies going against what people had decided his image was. But he was also rather unique in being a magical dud; not that he was about to talk about that aspect of his life. He was content to let the man think what he wanted. The less that he knew, the better.

Nocturne laughed at the next question and gave his head a little shake. “You would be surprised,” demanding intentions was probably one of the tamer things he had done recently in a bar considering he demanded a baby vampire take him to the upstairs sex lounge the last time he set foot inside a club. Again, probably something that was better left unsaid.

At the mention of the bourbon and it suddenly being filled, Nocturne eyed the bottle and noted it was of a higher standard. He still hadn't become a connoisseur over the last few weeks but knew enough to judge the man's drink of choice as quality and that his companion wasn't one to sip and savour.

"I feel like any quiet place that served good bourbon might kick you out for the way you toss it back like a shot of gold schlager," or beer, as Noct took a long drink from his, leaving about a quarter behind. Usually he would nurse his beer, preferring to only have one or two drinks for an entire night out but sometimes a quick drink and leaving his hands free for any given reason happened instead.

Actually, the more he focused on that urge to be kept unhindered, the more Nocturne felt it was on the listen to and to keep his wits sharp. He casually set his glass on the bar, deciding he didn't need more alcohol right then. One glass wasn't going to do much to him but he was getting the feeling that perhaps he really needed to stop wandering into clubs he had no business being in and to stop talking to men that he couldn't quite place. But other than setting down his drink, he did his best not to seem like anything had changed.

"We've established my oddity of demanding intentions of strangers in bars now what's your story for humouring me for so long?"

A snort that began in the man’s nostrils became a deep chuckle, and he wiped the back of his hand across his mouth, more as a reflex than to rid his lips of any residue. Perhaps to brush away the beginnings of an insult that had formed there, instead masking it as sardonic mirth. He finished another glass, as if in response to the comment Nocturne made, then followed it with a sigh as he briefly straightened his back to stretch. The action was short-lived; he raised his hand for yet another drink, then slouched over the glass once more.
“You may be right,” he began conditionally, “but I’d argue a business not willing to make money wouldn’t be much of a business.”

After all, Asher wasn’t belligerent - not in public, anyway. Not even after a few drinks. There was some benefit to the general population of Greenbrooke believing that he was some charming, quiet, tall glass of water who mostly kept to himself. Mystery was intriguing, and the charming aspect meant that he was approachable enough to make up for the glower he often sported, albeit unintentionally. Mostly. Truly, though, those who did approach him still had to overcome the fact that he was a massive, indomitable figure who likely looked as though he was capable of breaking bones by accident, even if he did smile every once in a while.

“We haven’t established anything. You said a whole lot of nothing.” There was nothing quizzical about the commentary - the statement was plain and insinuated that he wouldn’t be answering any questions - or if he did, he’d be mirroring the deflective nature of Nocturne’s responses. He gave what he got, to a point. “You have a strange way of defining humour,” he muttered. “But I’ll bite.” Maybe literally. “I’m here looking for … talent. Are you talented?” Any mundane who was entirely unaware of their world would be baffled by the question - or perhaps assume Asher was implying some kind of sex work. But a preternaturally aware individual would understand - and the alpha considered himself shrewd enough to determine what he needed out of whatever Nocturne deigned to offer in response.

Perhaps the other man would be caught off guard, or perhaps he’d be capable of hiding his understanding without a tell. Either way, Asher would get what he wanted out of someone who seemed as though he might not understand the danger he was in, mundane or not. But that was the charm of the man quietly sitting in the corner of a nightclub with no name to himself outside of the circles he ran in: he was harmless until he wasn’t.

Nocturne had let his gaze wander out to the crowd that was dancing as he contemplated if and when he wanted to join them. However, at the mention of whether or not he had talents, his gaze darted back to the sexy stranger and he quirked a brow. Being in a shifter club and the way the topic was brought up made it obvious he wasn’t being asked to audition on the casting couch—although it did still sort of have that vibe and he wondered if that was intentional. He studied his companion for a long moment before a slow smirk appeared. “I’m a jack of all trades and a master of none.” That was true enough given his interest in a variety of hobbies and how he wasn’t a master in magic and certainly not that talented in what he was cursed with. Even now his nullifying aura leaked out lightly because he couldn’t rein it all in whether because he was talentless or too powerful like the Guardians liked to sweet talk him with.

“And what about yourself? I get the impression you enjoy the hunt and ferreting out your prey.” That was what was causing Nocturne to be on alert. The conversation had seemed harmless enough even if on the odd side at times but now it was all making sense as pieces fit together. They had never been on equal ground and he was being tested and toyed with to some degree. What type of predator was the shifter before him? What game had he carelessly sauntered into? If he was going to ask himself questions as he continued to grin and act like everything was perfectly fine, then why would a shifter care if he had any talents? He was fairly sure they could sniff each other out.

Shit.

A man that was giving off a fairly dangerous aura that was asking after his skills which also tested how preternaturally aware he was didn’t mean shifter, at least not in the pure sense the species went with. He was tangoing with a wolf. That’s why he looked familiar. The Guardians didn’t know much about the leaders of packs or most vampire Families save for what they wished to be known but some photos and names were kept on hand. It helped to know who was in charge if a fight broke out or to generally ensure boundaries weren’t trying to be expanded on the sly.

Great. He was now known to one of the stronger master vampires in the area and was slowly grabbing the attention of an alpha. His Pops really was going to kill him this time. Nocturne hadn’t wanted to report his interaction with Rafe to his dad but knew he had to in order to keep their family safe. But Asher Bishop currently didn’t know his name or his power so perhaps he could walk away safely and leave it that way.

But how was he going to do that without making it seem like he was scurrying away and intriguing the wolf more?

Asher’s stare, the one that he’d previously levelled on the gyrating crowd, now settled on the man before him. It was a calculative stare, one that glittered with knowing and a deep kind of anticipatory malice. It suggested violence, but not the uninhibited sort that couldn’t reign itself in; the sort that was slow, considered, stealthy.
”Well then, Jack,” the alpha drawled, his eyes never leaving Nocturne’s, “Do let me know if you’re in the market for a change of employment. You seem quite the useful sort.”

The alpha didn’t need his name. This place was run by shifters who were all terrified of him; one of them would know, and one of them would tell him. And if they didn’t, he had other ways of finding out. Turning young adults who had their noses glued to the social media on their phones had its perks.
“Hunting and ferreting?” Asher scoffed, breaking eye contact and returning to his drink. “What do you think I am? Some sort of animal? Sex work is real work, son.”

It wasn’t an attempt in earnest, but perhaps the comment would ease Nocturne’s mind a little - or at least make him question what he now assumed of Asher. A basic trick of manipulation, something that might be just enough to get this guy to see Asher as he had upon arrival; that same, sexy stranger in the shadows that seemed far more approachable before he started digging. And wasn’t that what everyone wanted? To turn back time on those they found attractive and see only the best of them? To see what they wanted to see?

”I think that one’s definitely into you.” Asher briefly looked back up at the other man, then jerked his chin in the direction of the woman who had been nudging her friend and looking over at the two of them. “You should go, dance. I’m sure she’s far more interesting than I am.”

Nocturne laughed as Asher tried to make it seem as if he really was just a pimp looking for someone new. If he hadn't already figured things out, being called 'son' by someone that didn't look that much older would have tipped him off to being in the presence of a much older being.

"Agreed on that point," he opted to keep his reply short and simple and not let on that he knew who Asher was or what he might actually be looking for. Nocturne didn't know how the packs worked but he assumed not every wolf was an accidental turning and that most would be scouted or at least intentionally turned for whatever reason. Asher might be considering him, or would if he had been given more clear cut answers. But Nocturne knew if he confessed to being a null, he would be sought out for other reasons and affiliated with the pack, just not by bond.

He followed Asher's gaze when the woman was mentioned and tried to sort out why he was being given an easy out. Either Asher had decided he wasn't what was desired or he hoped to get Nocturne interested enough to stay and be more forthcoming or to seek him out later on. As attractive as the man was, Nocturne didn't think he would intentionally seek Asher out again.

"Agreed on that as well. I was looking for more of a challenge when I arrived but sometimes easy is all that is really needed. It's been something close to a pleasure," Nocturne nodded in parting before weaving back through the crowd to chat up the girls. He'd give them a dance but ny the end of the second song together he would be gone and taking the long and twisting route home again just in case.

Without looking at him, Asher nodded to both points, apparently showing an utter disinterest at this juncture. He hunched over his glass as he had been when Nocturne arrived, and continued to sip and order.
”A pleasure,” he agreed, and though he let the words come tiredly, there was some spark to them that might have suggested candour. For what reason, though, would remain ambiguous.

When the other man turned to leave, Asher pulled his phone out from his pocket and futzed around with it for a while before figuring out how to take a boomerang. Nocturne was still speaking to the woman he’d pointed out when the alpha lifted his phone and shot a short clip of the crowd, sure to include the younger man, and promptly posted it to his Instagram stories. These weren’t a common occurrence for Asher, but they weren’t entirely out of the blue, either; a totally normal thing for a guy to do when out on a Saturday evening, right? He tagged the nightclub and wrote: “Great bourbon and scenery @MasqueradeNC ??” before locking his phone, stuffing it back in his pocket, and turning to the bartender and presenting them with his credit card.

Not a moment later and the wolf was gone, his empty glass abandoned in his wake, leaving plenty of time for Nocturne not only to wonder where he went, but consider himself safe on his way home. Or perhaps he’d feel watched. Either way, Asher no control over that now, did he?
